Our main weed control methods in annual crops: we harrow the fields when the weeds are small and have just a fine hair-like root. The grain has a stronger root system when it emerges than the weeds do, and for that reason you can harrow through the grain, and the grain will be damaged and will look kind of beaten up for a couple of days, but as long as the weeds are very small, say about an inch high, it will pull the weeds out and you’ll get almost 100% kill on your weeds. It’s kind of scary, you can see in the photo where I’ve already harrowed there is a lot less growth than there is right in front of the horses as they are coming towards you, but this method does work quite well as long as you timing is good on it.
