The apprentices are checking to seed if the carrots planted June 17th have germinated yet. The carpet strips over the rows keep them moist in spite of dry weather and help ensure good germination. However it is crucial to remove the shading strips as soon as they have germinated, otherwise the carrot seedlings will also be shaded out.
