We had another addition to the family a few days ago and one of our local coyotes was checkin it out. The cows do a pretty good job of fending off the coyotes, but now and then a cow will put her calf at risk by wondering off to give birth in private. We try to keep a donkey with each group of cows to help keep the coyotes at bay. I don't want to shoot the coyotes if they're not causing problems because they do eat a pile of gophers in a season. During dry years gophers can eat a large percentage of the pasture if the population is not kept under control.
