OACC Brookside Field Site – Nova Scotia Agricultural College (NSAC)Truro, Nova Scotia OACC Field Day 2006
Soybean variety trial: Soybeans are a high value crop in organic farming,
but also are a difficult one to grow due to warm seedbed requirements
and poor weed competitiveness. We are testing 8 varieties of soybean at
15 cm (6 in) and 30 cm (12 in) row spacings for their maturity date, yield
and quality for food uses. The default market for soybean is the feed
market. Soybeans should be kept as clean as possible for food grade markets;
staining of the seed reduces marketability because the tofu or soy milk
color will lose its pure white color. |
