An excerpt from Module 1:
There are certain principles which formed the foundation of the organic agriculture movement when it began, and which continue to form the basis for management decisions on organic farms. These principles are also the basis from which the standards of organic production were, and continue to be, developed. The following principles are listed as the "foundation of organic production" in the National Standard of Canada (Canadian General Standards Board 1999).

1. Contribute to protecting the environment, minimize soil degradation and erosion, decrease pollution, optimize biological productivity and promote a sound state of health.
2. Replenish and maintain long-term soil fertility by optimizing conditions for biological activity within the soil.
3. Maintain diversity within the enterprise and protect and enhance the biological diversity of native plants and wildlife.
4. Recycle materials and resources to the greatest extent possible within the enterprise.
5. Provide attentive care that promotes the health and behavioral needs of livestock.
6. Maintain the integrity of organic food and processed products from initial handling to point of sale.
